Powdery mildew PMin which a white powdery growth appears on leaves in mid to late summer, causing distortion, dieback and a serious decline in productivity, is the most common disease of squashes and other cucurbits all over the world. Resistant varieties are not necessarily immune to PM, but are less affected, often showing no or milder symptoms or the symptoms show up later, after the crop is harvested.

Ideally, then, if powdery mildew has been a problem in the past, the wise gardener would choose resistant varieties in the following years. The varieties below are considered powdery mildew resistant. Those are such extensive lists that there does not seem to be much that is not on them. All that I grow is there, which could be why powdery milder is not much of a problem. We get it, but it does not do much damage.

Tomatoes, for example, are particularly prone to various forms of blight, while squash and pumpkin can often fall ill to powdery mildew. Below is a list of common vegetables and seed varieties that are resistant to disease and other conditions.

It is only a starting point, but gives you a good idea of the resistance of some of the more popular cultivars. The vegetable variety is listed first followed by the resistant diseases.

Unfortunately, monarda is particularly susceptible to this disease. The good news is that, while it may make them unsightly, powdery mildew rarely permanently damages plants.

As a result, most gardeners opt to cut infected stems back early and hope things will improve the next year. While there is currently no cure for powdery mildew, the recommended methods of control include pruningno overhead watering and fungicides.

That being said, the best strategy is always to choose plants that are resistant or at least tolerant to the disease. Meanwhile, the experts at Mt. Cuba Center are providing a roadmap. In the hopes of improving the home gardener experience, researchers at the botanical garden recently conducted a study to assess the disease resistance of 40 monarda species and their cultivars.

The three-year trial evaluated each plant, each week, for quality of foliage, abundance of bloom and propensity for mildew.

No one plant performed perfectly, but there were several deserving of honorable mention. Those top-performing varieties are listed below. Therefore, cultivars become susceptible more quickly under the high disease pressure and more rapid changes of virulence in the pathogen population. Knowledge of the identity of race-specific resistance genes in wheat cultivars is a requirement to identify which resistance genes becoming ineffective. The use of molecular marker assisted selection breeding is a quick and easy approach to identify resistance genes.

Molecular markers have been used to identify resistance genes against various diseases in wheat. Among various types of markers, simple sequence repeat SSR and single-nucleotide polymorphism SNP markers have recently been widely used in studying genes for resistance to powdery mildew Keller et al.

Yunnan Province, located in the southwest of China, has complex and diverse ecological environments and climates. In this region, wheat powdery mildew is very serious and epidemic occurs every year. Because of the disease-favorable environments, Yunnan provides initial inoculum for wheat powdery mildew, stem rust, leaf rust, and stripe rust, playing a key role in the regional spread and large-scale epidemic of the diseases in China Li et al. Therefore, assessment of the resistance level of the main production cultivars to these diseases as well as identification of resistance genes in the cultivars can provide a theoretical basis for diseases management by rationally deploying cultivars with various resistance genes in different areas.

Resistance to stripe rust in Yunnan wheat cultivars has been studied by Li In our previous study, resistance to stem rust in main wheat cultivars of the region was also studied Li et al.

As you go about seeking disease-resistant crop varieties, first understand what diseases are present in your area. Once you know your enemy, finding the right crop variety will be that much easier. Here are some of our recommended varieties of your favorite crops to help you get started. The bee balm cultivars most resistant to this species of powdery mildew appear to be Blue Stocking, Violet Queen, and Marshall's Delight.
